4.3 Bio Maths

Alex Selwood-Taylor Biology AS level English 17 cards

Cards in this deck (17)

  1. 1What is standard deviation?Measure of variation. Measure the amount of variation or spread from the mean
  2. 2What does a low standard deviation mean?Indicates that data has a narrow range and points are closely grouped to the mean- indicates greater reliability
  3. 3What does a high standard deviation mean?Indicates that the data points have a larger range and are less well grouped- may indicate lower reliability
  4. 4What is the Student's t-test used to do?Compares two means. Tests the difference between the two means is a sig. difference.
  5. 5What do you have to do in a Student's t-test?First state a null hypothesis= there is no sig difference between the means of these two sets of data. t-test will test whether we can reject it or accept it.
  6. 6What are the degrees of freedom? The number of values in a statistical calculation that are free to vary.
  7. 7Calculation of the degrees of freedom:(sample size) - (the number of data sets)
  8. 8The number of degrees of freedom and the t-value=Must be taken into account when considering if calculated t-value is significant
  9. 9What is a significant difference level?5%
  10. 10If the value of t is greater then 5%..?Consider the two sets of data to be significant
Do not have to accept null hypothesis
  11. 11If the value of t is lower than 5%..?The difference between the two sets of data to be insignificant.
    Must accept null hypothesis
  12. 12What is the correlation coefficient used for?Used to consider the relationships between the two sets of data.
  13. 13What does the Spearman's rank correlation tell us?Whether two sets of data are correlated or not.
  14. 14What do we need with the Spearman's rank?A null hypothesis- "There is no relationship between eg. light intensity and the per cent plant cover"
  15. 15Spearman's rank value indicates a correlation using..A table of critical values
  16. 16If the Spearman's rank is below the critical value=There is no significant correlation
  17. 17What does a negative mean for the correlation in the Spearman's rank? There is a negative correlation- not a sig correlationCHECK
