Flashcards

Ionisation energy

ray :) Chemistry GCSE English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1Define electron orbial.A region / space inside an atom that can hold up to 2 electrons.
  2. 2How can 3 electrons be in the same orbital? Why don't they repel?They have 2 opposite spins, therefore they will not repel each other.
  3. 3What is the electronic configuration of chromium?1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d5, 4s1
  4. 4what is the electronic configuration of copper?1s2, 2s2, sp6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d10, 4s1
  5. 5What happens to the energy of the sub energy levels going from s to f?It energy increases from s to f.
  6. 6what happens to the difference in energy between the atomic orbitals going from s sub shell to f sub shells?The difference in energy between the atomic orbitals decreases as the energy of the sub shells increases.
  7. 7what is first ionization energy?this is the energy needed to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous +1 charged ions.
  8. 8what is the general formula used for first ionisation energy?X(g) --> X+(g) + e-
  9. 9What happens to the first ionisation energy if the atomic radius increases and why?The first ionisation energy decreases, because the outershell electron being removed is further away from the nucleus, and there is more shielding.
    - so there are weaker forces of attraction between the negative electron and the positive nuclei.
    - so the electron is lost easily.
  10. 10What gives evidence for the existence of energy levels?The big jumps in the ionisation energy, the big jumps always occur when an electron is being removed from a new energy level/ shell.
  11. 11What gives evidence for the existence of energy sub levels?- The deviation of group 6 and group 5. Group 6 have a lower first ionisation energy than group 5, this is because the electrons in group 6 are in the 3p orbital which is slightly higher energy than the 2s or 3s orbital. So there is more shielding and hence the electron is removed easily / lost easily due to the weaker forces of attraction between the nuclei and the electrons.
