Flashcards

C2.1 - The Atom

Aalia Rizvi Chemistry GCSE English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1How big is an atom?- Diameter is 1x10^(-10)m
    Order of Magnitude estimate
    - 100 million atoms side by side would cover 1cm
  2. 2MoleculeA group of atoms strongly joined together
  3. 3How big is a nucleus?- Diameter is 2x10^(-15)m
    - Diameter of an atom is 50,000 times larger than it's nucleus
  4. 4Nucleus- Made of protons (+) and neutrons (0 charge) with the same mass (1) - subatomic particles
    - Electrons (-) orbit the nucleus - mass is negligible
    - Same number of protons and electrons
    - Atom has no overall charge
  5. 5Atomic NumberNumber of protons (and/or electrons)
    Located above the element symbol
  6. 6Mass NumberNumber of protons and neutrons
  7. 7IsotopesAtoms of the same element with the same number of protons and different numbers of neutrons
    Many elements have multiple isotopes
    EG: Hydrogen has 3 isotopes (1p+1n, 1p+0n, 1p+2n)
Written with the mass number on top and atomic number on the bottom
