Cards in this deck (13)
- 1Incomplete DominanceOccurs when one allele is not completely dominant to another. This results in the offspring being a blend of both the parental characteristics (and intermediate phenotype).
- 2Co-dominanceOccurs when both alleles are dominant and fully expressed in the offspring.
- 3SegregationThe separation of paired alleles or homologous chromosomes, especially during meiosis, so that the members of each pair appear in different gametes.
- 4Independent AssortmentThe process of random segregation and assortment of chromosomes during meiosis resulting in the production of genetically unique gametes.
- 5Gene poolThe total sum of different genes in an interbreeding population.
- 6Multiple allelesThree or more alleles for a particular gene.
- 7Linked genesGenes that are inherited together with other gene(s) as they are located close together on the same chromosome.
- 8Genetic biodiversityRefers to the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic make-up of a species.
- 9EvolutionA gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better adapted form.
- 10Natural SelectionThe process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring (works on phenotype).
- 11Genetic driftThe process of change in the genetic composition of a population due to chance or random events rather than by natural selection.
- 12Founder EffectThe reduced genetic diversity which results when a population is descended from a small number of colonising ancestors.
- 13Population bottleneckA sharp reduction size of a population due to environmental events (such as earthquakes, floods, fires or droughts) or human activities.
