Flashcards
Computer Systems
Cards in this deck (18)
- 1What is a computer system?A computer system is a collection of hardware and software that works together. It allows for input, process and output.
- 2What is RAM?Random Access Memory is used to process data currently being used by the processor. It is volatile meaning once power is switched off, all memory is lost. It also allows faster access for the CPU.
- 3What is ROM?Read Only Memory is a non-volatile memory, meaning that all data is kept even after being turned off. Holds the BIOS which includes the bootstrap, which has the instructions to start up the computer.
- 4What is the motherboard? It is a circuit board which connects the CPU to all hardwares and memory. Also has system buses which connect CPU to other components. It has the ROM and RAM.
- 5What is the processor? It processes data by executing data and coordinates other parts. Has a fan and heat sink to protect is from over heating.
- 6What is a hard drive? The hard drive is a type of secondary storage to store files and program instructions. Its non-volatile.
- 7What four compenents do a computer system have?Input, Processing, Output and Storage?
- 8What's a Dual/Quad Core? What's the advantage?Dual - Can perform 2 tasks simultaneously.
Quad - Can perform 4 tasks simultaneously.#
The CPU is faster - 9What is Clock Speed? What is it measured in?Clock speed represents the number of instructions the CPU can perform in a given time. It's measured in Hz - GHz (a billion cycles in a second - MHz (a million cycles in a second) -
- 10What is cache storage? What does it store?High speed memory that stores frequently used instructions.
- 11Why is the CPU needed?Needed to run the computer (processes data and executes instruction).
- 12Why is secondary storage needed in a computer?Stores large amounts of data and programs that are not running on CPU.
- 13What factors to consider when selecting a secondary storage device? How much it costs, portability, durability speed and how much storage it has.
- 14Magnetic storageUse - Hard disk in computers
Advantages - Reliable, high capacity, low cost
Disadvantages - Not very portable, not very durable - 15Optical StorageUse - Transfer file, distributing software
Advantages - Low cost, lightweight & portable
Disadvantages - Limited capacity, bad durability (can get scratched). - 16Solid StateUse - Found in cameras and phones
Advantages - No moving parts, large capacity and high read/write speed - 17What are input devicesSend control signals to the computer.
- 18What are output devicesCommunicate the results of processed data.
