Problems with Groups
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1Status Differentials-Status refers to the social standing of the group - low and high positions in groups
-2 Types: Ascribed (prestige of their role in the business) and Achieved (social standing regardless of position).
-High status members hold more power, initiate the most and dominate - because of who they are rather their qualities.
-Lower status may agree just to please higher status, or may be afraid to speak. - 2Managing Status Differentials-Let junior members speak first
-Offer psychological support for juniors
-Try and avoid extreme status differences - 3Group Norms-Refer to informal rules of behaviour
-Eg group members cant question each other and seating arrangement is unwritten rule
-More intelligent members= Less conforming
-Conformity is higher during threats and uncertainty
-Higher in larger groups
-Conformity= suppressed views in favour of dominant viewpoint.
-Violating norms leads to being ignored and rejection - 4Managing Group Norms-Keep groups small
-Observe behaviour in the group
-Stop predictability - unpredictable management style - 5Group Think-Source of pressure to conform.
-Occurs as members unconsciously suppress their views
-Possibly more dangerous than conformity to group norms
-Symptoms: false unanimity, stereotyping, rationalisation, belief in morality of group.
-Consequences: Poor assessment of options, failure to develop proper contingency plans, discussion limited to few alternatives - 6Managing Group Think-Establish parallel group
-Involve outsiders in discussion
-Insist on contingency planning
-Use subgroups to generate and evaluate options.
-Take time to think before making final decision. - 7Risky and Cautious (Polarisation) Shift-Taking more risky/cautious decision than if they were working alone.
-Groups protect individuals from blame
-Those who are more riskier dominate and make decisions.
