About Teams and Group Dynamics

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The unit looks at how people work together in groups and teams. Much of it is mind maps, which sit alongside flashcard decks, quizzes, flowcharts, notes and a slide set. Most of the material is aimed at university level.

Team roles

Start with the Belbin Team Role Model flashcard deck. It runs through the Implementer, Resource Investigator, Plant, Monitor, Shaper, Coordinator, Completer Finisher, Teamworker and Specialist. Then open the Belbin Roles mind map, which sorts the roles into action, people and thought orientated groups. The TEAM ROLES mind map adds short descriptions, such as the creative, imaginative Plant.

How teams develop and perform

Several maps and decks cover Tuckman's stages, including Tuckman's five stage model and Gersick's punctuated equilibrium model, which gives you a second view of how teams change over time. For performance, the High Performance Teams mind map explains autonomous teams working toward a common goal. The maps on leading high-performance teams and decision making in teams cover team building and brainstorming guidelines, such as ruling out criticism and welcoming quantity of ideas.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then take a quiz to see what stuck. The quiz on collaboration, teamworking and responsibility to others is a good place to begin. Go back to the map for any answer you missed, then test yourself with a flashcard deck such as Work Team vs Workgroup or Types of teams.

Where it fits

This unit belongs to the People, Organisation and Leadership strand of Business administration and management (incl. project management). Teachers can use the maps and decks as ready-made material for a class discussion.

Choose one map that matches your current topic, work through it, and then see how much you can recall.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Begin with the Belbin Team Role Model flashcard deck, then the Belbin Roles mind map. Together they give you the nine roles and the way they group into action, people and thought orientated types. After that, move on to the Tuckman material for team development.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover team roles, Tuckman's stages, high performance teams, decision making and brainstorming, team building, diversity and virtual teams, and what makes a good team player. Some are short outlines, while others, like Working with teams - Textbook, follow a chapter in more detail.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so style and depth vary from one resource to the next. Check a map or deck matches your course.

Who are these resources for?

Mostly university students, who will find the most material at that level. Teachers can use the maps, decks and quizzes as ready-made material. A few resources are simpler, so school students getting a first look at teamwork may find something useful too.

Are there quizzes on this page?

Yes, there are more than 15 quizzes. One focuses on collaboration, teamworking and responsibility to others, and others are chapter-based, such as MGMT Chapter 17 Quiz and Management 1001 Chapter 15. Use them after reading a map to find the gaps.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Make your own. A free account lets you build quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, and it saves your quiz scores. You could also borrow ideas from related maps on this page, such as the ones on team management or diversity, and adapt them.
