Flashcards
D - Bandwidth
Cards in this deck (6)
- 1BandwidthBandwidth measures the amount of data which can be uploaded/downloaded within a specific measure of time.
It is measure in bits per second, e.g. 8mbps.
A higher bandwidth means that more frequencies are available to a communications channel meaning more data can flow per second. - 2Bandwidth BottleneckA bottleneck is the smallest bandwidth that exists between the user and the source of the data that it is being downloaded from. This may mean that the download speed is lower than your original bandwidth as the channel between the user and source does not have as many frequencies as the users connection allows.
- 3Bandwidth UseA low bandwidth is only useful for text use on the internet. If the downloading of multimedia is required the bandwidth will need to be higher. A higher bandwidth link makes the following things possible:
> Video - viewing video streams in real time.
> Audio - listening to stream music.
Without a high bandwidth multimedia playback freezes and becomes out of sync. - 4Copper CableThe bandwidth signal becomes weaker the longer the cable is, therefore the length of the cable determines the bandwidth of the link.
Co-axial cables:
These were used in older networks and consisted of two wires with the outer wire used as a shield. They are still used within the television industry due to its capacity for high bandwidths. - 5OpticalFibre-optic cables are small glass tubes that reflect light along the length of the tube. These are used when more than 100m of cable is required. Fibre-optic cables are not susceptible to electrical interference and do not suffer very much data loss, meaning that the bandwidths available are much higher than copper cables.
- 6WirelessWireless communication can consist of many methods such as radio frequencies, satellite and infra-red. This means that the network does not require cables however there are disadvantages too:
> There are a smaller range of frequencies available - the bandwidth available is narrower
> Obstacles (e.g. walls/steel) can cause interference which reduces the transmission rate
