Unit 1 Flashcards

mottenbreit School 8th Grade English 24 cards

Cards in this deck (24)

  1. 1Constant-something that doesn't change
    -continues or remains steady
  2. 2Control-an experiment that isolates the effect on one variable
-hold constant all variables but the one under observation
  3. 3Independent Variable-variable you have control over (manipulate, change)
    -x axis
    -experimenter controls IV
  4. 4Dependent Variable-changing IV causes change in DV
    -measurable by experimenter
-best fit line shows relationship between IV and DV (goes on Y axis)
  5. 5Controlled Experiment-an experiment designed to minimize the effects of variables other than the single independent variable
  6. 6Hypothesis-"educated guess"
-based on prior knowledge and observation
  7. 7Law-a statement based on repeated observation that describes a pattern
    -How?
  8. 8Best-fit line, curve-shows wether these two variables appear to be correlated
  9. 9Derived Unit-Any unit that is a combination of two or more based units
-EX: speed (meters/second) or density (grams/milliliter)
  10. 10Safety Rules1. Always know what you're doing before acting
    2. Safety gear is not optional
    3. Be careful but if an accident happens notify a teacher immediately
  11. 11Observation-An act or instance of noticing or perceiving
    -Habit of observing
  12. 12Seconds-standard unit of time
  13. 13Density (g/mL)-Density=Mass/Volume
  14. 14Kilograms-Mass
    -10(3)
  15. 15Variables-An item, factor or condition that can be controlled or changed
  16. 16Theory-A statement that explains why a law appears to be true
    -Why?
    -Explains scientific facts
  17. 17Inference-Act or process of deriving logical conclusions that are assumed to be true
  18. 18Line-graph-Illustrate the relationship between the IV and DV in an experiment
  19. 19Meter-Length
    -Base unit
    -10 (0)
  20. 20Volume-The amount of space occupied by an object
  21. 21Mass-in kilograms
  22. 22Precision-How precisely you can make your measurements
    -Smaller unit you use=more precise
  23. 23Liter-Basic unit of liquid volume
  24. 24Accuracy-Tells you how close your measurements of the variable are to the true value
    -"real value"
