Chemistry- Separation methods

AsimAli Rehman Chemistry GCSE English 3 cards

Cards in this deck (3)

  1. 1How can you seperate different dyes in ink or substances in a mixture using chromatograph?1)Draw a line near the bottom of the filter paper. (use pencil as it is wont dissolve in the solvent). Add a spot of ink to line and place sheet in beaker of solvent.
    2) Make sure ink isn't touching the solvent and place lid on top of container to stop solvent evapourating.
3)The solvent seeps up paper, carrying ink with it. Each different dye in ink will move up paper at different rate. Each dye will form spot in a different place. 1 spot per dye in ink.
    4) If any of dyes in the ink are insoluble in solvent they will stay on baseline.
    5) When solvent has nearly reached top of paper, take paper out of beaker and leave dry. The end result is pattern of spots called chromatogram. The one that travels highest up is the most soluble.
  2. 2How do you seperate a soluble salt from a solution with evapouration?1. Pour the solution into an evapourating dish and slowly heat the solution.
    2. The solvent will evapourate and the solution will get more concentrated. Eventually, crystals will start to form.
    3. Keep heating the evapourating dish until all you have left are dry crystals.
  3. 3How do you seperate a soluble salt from a solution with crystallisation?1. Pour the solution into an evapourating dish and gently heat the solution. Some of the solvent will evapourate and the solution will get more concentrated.
    2. Once some of the solvent has evapourated, or when you see crystals start to form remove the dish from the heat and leave the solution to cool.
    3. The salt should start to form crystals as it becomes insoluble in the cold, highly concentrated solution.
    4. Filter the crystals out of the solution and leave them in a warm place to dry.
