Flashcards

HAEMOGLOBIN BIOL2

ashiana121 AS AQA BIOLOGY A-Level English 14 cards

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1Haemoglobin molecules are make up of four coiled and folded polypeptide chains. What is each polypeptide chain associated with?A ferrous group - Fe2+
  2. 2How many oxygen molecules can each Fe2+ ion combine with?1
(1 haemoglobin molecule = 4 molecules of oxygen)
  3. 3What is the role of haemoglobin?Transporting oxygen
  4. 4What two factors are required for haemoglobin to be efficient at transporting oxygen?- Readily associate with oxygen at the gas exchange surface
    - Readily dissociate from oxygen at the tissues requiring it
  5. 5These two factors contradict each other. What property of haemoglobin makes it possible?Haemoglobin changes its affinity for oxygen under different conditions - its shape changes which makes it bind more loosely or strongly to oxygen
  6. 6Out of the gas exhange surface and the respiring tissues, where is the oxygen concentration high?Gas exchange surface
  7. 7What does this mean about the concentration of carbon dioxide at the gas exchange surface? It is low
  8. 8How does this low concentration of carbon dioxide affect the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen?Haemoglobin has a high affinity for oxygen
  9. 9What does this result in?Oxygen is attached readily
  10. 10At the respiring tissues, what is there a high concentration of and what is there a low concentration of?High concentration of carbon dioxide
    Low concentration of oxygen
  11. 11How does this high concentration of carbon dioxide affect the haemoglobins affinity for oxygen and what does this result in?The haemoglobin molecules have a low affinity for oxygen - oxygen is released from the haemoglobin molecules
  12. 12What type of haemoglobin does an organism living in an environment with little oxygen require? One that readily combines with oxygen ie a high affinity
  13. 13Why will it not matter that this haemoglobin does not readily dissociate with oxygen at the respiring tissues? The organisms metabolic rate may not be high
  14. 14Why do different haemoglobins have different affinities for oxygen? The shape of the molecule - slightly different sequences of amino acids - different affinities depending on the shape
