Flashcards

Atomic Spectroscopy

Michala Baldwin Chemistry South Australian Certificate of Education English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1electron configuration irregularschromium (Z = 24)
    1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 3d5
    copper (Z = 29)
    1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 2p6 4s1 3d10
  2. 2energy levels- energy levels of electrons in subshells of atom
    - electrons have a specific amount of energy when occupying a subshell
    - electrons transition between energy levels through absorption/emission of energy
  3. 3atomic absorptiontransition to higher energy level (e.g., 3s to 3p) will only occur if the quantity of energy absorbed by an electron is equal to difference in energy between 2 energy levels
  4. 4electromagnetic radiation- energy of a photon is dependent on its wavelength
    - electrons absorb/emit photons w a specific wavelength when they transition between energy levels
    - electrons in the same subshells of different atoms require a different wavelength of electromagnetic radiation to be absorbed/emitted
    - this makes each wavelength unique to each element
  5. 5atomic absorption spectroscopy- light source emits specific wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation that are absorbed by electrons of element under analysis
    - amount of radiation absorbed is proportional to the conc. of element in sample
  6. 6atomic absorption spectrometermonochromator = isolates a specific wavelength of radiation from light source for transmission to detector
    - monochromator only allows radiation that hasn't been absorbed by electrons to reach detector
  7. 7specificity of AAS- light source typically contains atoms of the element of interest
    - atoms in the lamp emit wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation when light source is energised
    - other elements in sample don't affect measurement since the radiation doesn't transition their electrons to higher energy levels (since wavelengths are specific to each element)
    - the wavelengths are absorbed by electrons of atoms of element under analysis
