What are enzymes and what do they do? They are a protein that functions as a biological catalyst, which speeds up a chemical reaction.
What is the lock and key model? Where the shape of the active site of the enzyme matches the shape of its substrate molecules.
What causes enzymes to denature? High temperatures or extremes of pH levels
What happens when an enzyme denatures? The shape of it changes, meaning it can no longer work.
What is the optimum temperature for an enzyme and why? Roughly 37-40 degrees for humans, as if it is too cold there are fewer collisions between enzymes and substrates, and if it is too hot the enzyme will denature
What enzyme breaks down starch, and to what? Amylase breaks it down into maltose
What enzyme breaks maltose down, and to what? Maltase breaks it down into glucose
Which enzymes breaks proteins down, and to what? Pepsin and trypsin (Proteases) breaks it down into amino acids
What enzyme breaks fats down, and to what? Lipase breaks it down into fatty acids and glycerol
