Piaget
Piaget believed that children pass through distinct developmental stages in sequences
He thought that children should be allowed to discover things for themselves through spontaneous play.
- Formal operations: for 11 up to 18 years, young people have the capacity for abstract thought, rational thought and problem solving
- Concrete operations: from 7 to 11 years, Children use practical resources to help them to understand the world, such as counters for maths
- Pre- operational: from 2 to 7 years. Children begin to control their environment by using symbolic behaviour but are not yet able to think logically.
- Criticism of Piaget: some critics believe that Piaget underestimated children development
- Sensorimotor: from birth to 2 years. infants learn about their environment and develop early concepts by using all their senses to physically explore the world.
Schematic development theory
- 1. Assimilation: the child constructs an understanding or concept
- 2. Equilibrium: the childs experience fits with their concept
- 3. Disequilibrium: a new experience diturbs the childs concept
- 4. Accommodation: the child's understading changes to take account of the new experience.
Egocentrism
- Piaget believed that, until children are 7 years old, they only see things from their own perspective.
- Criticism of Piaget: underestimates development, with support children can develop more advanced concepts
- Piaget believed that, until children are 7 years old, they only see things from their own perspective.
