1. Structure of an atom

   • All matter is made up of atoms, atoms cannot be created or destroyed

2. Atomic Number and Mass Number

   • Rutherford's gold foil experiment where he fired positive particles at gold foil explained that an atom in mainly open space
   • mass number - atomic number = neutrons

3. Isotopes

   • Isotopes are atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass number
   • The relative mass of an isotope is its mass number
   • A relative atomic mass is the mean mass of an atom of an element compared with carbon-12
