PIAGET

  • Originated theory by observing his children
  1. CONSTRUCTIVISM

    • Individuals develop increasingly complex mental representations of their environment based on consequence of action.
    • DEVELOPMENT
      • Development occurs and is constructed in the same order for all humans because there is an inherent logic to the gaining of knowledge. THE BUILDING BLOCKS ARE UNIVERSAL BUT DEVELOPMENT IS CONSTRUCTED INDIVIDUALLY.
      • OBJECT PERMANENCE
        • An object ceases to exist for infants when they can no longer see it.
      • EGOCENTRISM
        • Children are centred on themselves
        • MENTAL REPRESENTATIONS
          • As development occurs, they learn to hold objects for themselves - repetition of action (e.g dropping things) is prevalent. Repetition helps to build up MENTAL REPRESENTATIONS.
  2. SCHEMA

    • Mental Representation of a sequence of actions based on interaction with the environment. KEY TO DEVELOPMENT.
    • ASSIMILATION
      • The process of adaption is known as ASSIMILATION.
      • INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
        • The desire to apply SCHEMAS to new situations.
        • ACCOMMODATION
          • The process where schemas become modified to match the particular characteristics of objects or circumstances.
