Topic 10 - Spreadsheets

  1. Workbook

    • Made up on one or more 'worksheets'.
  2. Worksheet

    • A single tab in the spreadsheet workbook.
  3. Cells

    • Cell reference always starts with a letter then a number eg - C3, H28
    • A range of cells is a set of cells in a row or column.
    • Labels
      • Any text in a cell describing the data in a row or column.
    • Data
      • Any values that are enterred for the use of calculation.
    • Formulas and functions
      • Mathematical calculations carried out automatically.
  4. Formulas

    • Must start with an =
    • Perform calculations on cell contents
    • Show in the formula bar
    • Operators + - / *
  5. Functions

    • Must start with an =
    • Built into the software
    • Examples include AVERAGE, SUM, COUNT, MIN, MAX, IF
  6. Formatting

    • Content of a cell can be formatted
    • Data type can be changed (formatted)
  7. Replicating cells

    • Position the mouse pointer in the bottom right hand corner of the cell and drag down or across the spreadsheet. It tries to respond intelligently, and if there is a formula is copies it down.
  8. Graphs and Charts

    • Can be used to allow us to see patterns and trends in data.
  9. Relative cell references

    • If a formula is copied by replicating down, the cell references are adjusted as you drag down.
  10. Absolute cell references

    • This stops the cell reference from changing when we replicate formulas down.
    • B4 + $ = $B$4
