Atoms

1. All substances are made of atoms.

   • A substance that is made of only one sort of atom is called an element

2. The periodic table has groups that contain elements with similar properties

3. atoms have a small central nucleus, made up of protons and neutrons and around which there are electrons

4. Proton +1

   • Neutron 0
     • Electron -1

5. In an atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus.

   • Atoms have no overall electrical charge.

6. Atomic number= the number of protons in an atom

   • Mass number= sum of protons& neutrons

7. All atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons. All atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons.

8. Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons;

   • these atoms are called isotopes of that element.
