1. Atoms have a small nucleus surrounded by electrons

   • The nucleus contains protons and neutons
     • The nucleus has a positive charge.

2. Electons occupy the shells around the nucleus

3. Neutrons have no charge Protons have a positive charge Electrons are negitivly charged

4. The number of protons equals the number of electrons

5. Atoms have no overall charge

6. If some electrons are added or removed then the atom becomes an ion

7. If a substance only contains one type of atom then it's an element
