1. Embedded Systems

   • Computers built into other devices
   • Usually a dedicated system
     • Because of this, they are:
       • Cheaper to produce
       • Easier to design
       • More efficient
   • Often used as a control system
     • Because they monitor and control the machinery inside of that particular machine to achieve the desired result
   • E.g: microwaves, TVs, dishwashers
   • Example: In a dishwasher the embedded system could control the water system (intake and release), manage the various dishwasher cycles and even the thermostat to keep the water at an appropriate level

2. Purposes

   • General Purpose
     • Designed to do many tasks
     • e.g. Desktop PCs or tablets
   • Dedicated system
     • Designed for one purpose
     • e.g. Controlling traffic lights or an aeroplane

3. Main Purpose of Computer...

   • Output
   • Process
   • Input
   • More efficient than humans

4. Hardware / Software

   • Hardware
     • The physical components that make up the system
   • Software
     • The programs and applications that run on the system

5. Computers are in small devices such as calculators right the way through to supercomputers that are used by banks or scientific applications
