Images

  1. Vector

    • Doesn't store data as pixels like bitmaps
    • A set of instruction for drawing a geometric shape
    • File size
      • Smaller files than bitmap
    • Positives
      • Can be scaled without loss of quality
      • Small file sizes
    • Negatives
      • Limited to geometric shapes
  2. Bitmap

    • Thousands of small coloured dots called pixels
      • Pixels
        • Pixels is short for picture elements
        • Each pixel holds a binary value for what colour it is
        • Bitmap images are stored as an array of pixels
    • File size
      • Relatively large files
    • Positives
      • Can illustrate complex shapes
    • Negatives
      • Large file size
      • Pixelates when enlarging
  3. Resolution

    • The greater the resolution the greater the quality of the image but the larger the file
  4. Metadata

    • Refers to 'data about data'
    • Stores data such as:
      • Image height
      • Image width
      • Image colour depth
      • Date image was made
      • Where the photo was taken (geotag)
    • Without metadata a computer may be render an image incorrectly, such as displaying pixels all on one row
