Computer systems

  1. Off the shelf

    • Buy in store
    • Examples: -Microsoft office -Adobe
    • Lots of online support and don't need extensive training for employees.
    • Heavily tested.
  2. Open source software

    • view and modify code
    • Examples: -Linux -VLC media player
    • Either free or very cheap
    • You can study, edit and improve the source code
    • Credit all previous contributors
    • Let modifications legal for other users.
  3. Custom written software

    • Software made for a specific task
    • An example is that Sainsbury's may have their own stock control system.
    • Software developers meet with clients to produce the idea so it meets every need.
    • Very expensive as takes a lot of time to create
    • Need to train employees to use it.
  4. Proprietary software

    • Illegal to make copy's or share
    • Software that can't be copied or altered without owners permission.
    • Most off the shelf is proprietary because it has a licence.
