- Water enters the thylakoid space from the water transport systems. The energy from the light breaks the covalent bonding within water and splits it into 2H atoms and 1O atom.
- Light energy further splits the H atoms into 2H+ ions and 2e-.
- The protons create a proton gradient across the membrane so the H+ can flow by chemiosmosis and drive ATP synthase.
