1. purpose

   • fix bugs
   • improve design
   • add extra functionality
   • external changes like new legislation
   • change in the design because the actual business changed its design too

2. types of maintenance

   • Stage one
     • Corrective
       • errors found In the original software, this is missed by texting and only becomes clear when in normal use. This must be corrected to enhance the users experience and to make the software usable
         • Fixes problems such as bugs that are frequent but only when the system has been in constant use.
         • The corrective fixes anything that is not functioning the way it should be
   • stage two
     • perfective
       • during use there seems to be elements that are not performing their optimum. Thus software is altered to improve performance.
         • The system has no faults, it runs at a satisfactorily level all the time. However there are clear points to improve on.
         • this is perfecting software, therefore adding in extra reports and faster queries or editorial options.
   • Stage three
     • adaptive
       • the parameters used to setup has changed, maybe vat percentage. the software must be updated to current parameters.
       • All systems will need to adapt to changing needs within an organisation. E.g. As an organisation expands, it may be necessary to convert a standalone system to a multi-user system. New and better hardware becomes available. New government legislation may mean changes
