Topic 5- The Nervous System

  1. What is The Nervous System?

    • it is a network of nerve cells that allows humans to react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour
    • It carries very fast electrical impulses so you can react quickly to your environment
  2. Parts of The Nervous System

    • Central Nervous System (CNS)
      • consists of the brain and spine
    • Motor Neurones
      • The long axon to carry nerve impulses from one part of the body to another
      • neurones that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to the effectors
    • Sensory Neurones
      • lots of dendrites to make more connections
      • neurones that carry information as electrical impulses from the receptors to the CNS
  3. Synapses

    • the connection between to neurones is called a synapse
    • the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap
    • these chemicals send off a new electrical signal in the next neurone
  4. Pathways of the Nervous system

    • voluntary/concious action
      • brain can control
    • reflex action/unconcious action
      • brain cannot control
