Secondary storage

  1. Secondary storage is non volatile storage that stores data permanently

  2. optical

    • Disadvantages
      • Has a smaller capacity compared to magnetic and solid state meaning that you can't store as much data on these devices, therfore you are more likely to get magnetic or solid state
      • Not very durable and is more likely to break compared to magnetic because it has moving parts so that it is more likely to break
    • Advantages
      • Cost effective compared to solid state and magnetic, therefore you get more product out of your money
  3. Solid state

    • Advantages
      • Solid state has no moving parts unlike optical meaning that it is more durable than optical therefore it is less likely to break
      • Faster read/write speed compared to magnetic. Therefore it will load programs and files much quicker.
    • Disadvantages
      • Less cost effective in comparison to magnetic because it has a much smaller capacity.
      • Has a slower read/ write speed than optical and magnetic meaning it would be less cost effective.
  4. Magnetic

    • Advantages
      • More durable due to having a larger capacity than solid state
    • Disadvantages
      • Not as durable due to moving parts and reads/writes slower in comparison to solid state
