Secondary Storage

  1. Secondary storage is non volatile storage which stores data permanently

  2. Optical

    • Advantage
      • It's more cost effective compared to solid state if you need to make many copies of files for other people to use
      • It's more portable compared to solid state and magnetic storage therefore you can easily play it on numerous devices
    • Disadvantage
      • It's not as durable compared to solid state because it can scratch easily
    • CDs,DVDs and Blu-rays are examples of optical storage
  3. Solid State

    • Advantage
      • Solid State is more durable than magnetic and optical storage as it has no moving parts therefore none can fall off/hit other parts
      • Solid State also has a fast read/write speed compared to magnetic storage therefore companies can work faster without delay
    • Disadvantage
      • It's less cost effective compared to magnetic storage because it has a much smaller storage capacity
    • Phones, computers, laptops and tablets are examples of solid state
  4. Magnetic

    • Magnetic tapes, floppy disks, hard disk drives and PCs are examples of magnetic storage
    • Advantage
      • It's more cost effective compared to solid state because it has a larger capacity and it's cheaper
    • Disadvantage
      • It's not as durable compared to solid state because it has moving parts meaning that they could fall off/hit other parts
      • Magnetic state has a slower read/write speed compared to solid state therefore companies take longer to access files
