Atoms Elements and Compounds

1. Atoms make up everything

   • Atoms are too small to see, even with a microscope

2. Atoms in an element are the same as each other

   • The atoms of certain elements don't join together (left), however some do and form molecules (right)

3. Compounds are substances that contain atoms of two or more different elements

   • An example of a compound is water as it is made up of hydrogen and oxygen

4. Each element has a chemical symbol

   • They all start with a capital letter and the second letter in lowercase
