microwaves

microwaves

1. communication to and from satelites uses microwaves however these microwaves need to be ones which easily pass through the watery atmosphere

   • Radio waves CAN'T get through the watery atmosphere

2. Satelite TV

   • signal sent from transmitter and transmitted into space
     • satellite picks it up and transmits it back to earth in different direction
       • Recieved by satellite dish

3. Mobile phone calls

   • These travel as microwaves between the phone and the nearest transmitter
     • NEGATIVE: some wavelengths of microwaves are absorbed by water and cause it to heat up so if this is water in your body it could damage health some say frequent mobile phone use or living next to a mast could damage heath but there's no evidence either way yet.

4. Remote sensing satellites

   • These satellites 'see' through clouds and can be used to track oil spills, iceberg movement etc
