Topic 2 - Connectivity
HOME NETWORK
- such as a modem or router
- Router - send data to where you want to go
- Modem - convert signal so that the computer can use it
- WAN
- Wide Area Network is type of computer network to connect offices which are located in different geographical locations.
- LAN
- Local Area Network is a private computer network that connects computers in small physical areas.
- such as a modem or router
BANDWIDTH
- the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time
- better=higher
- the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time
LATENCY
- amount of time a message takes to transverse a system
- better=low
- amount of time a message takes to transverse a system
PHYSICAL RISKS OF DATA
- damage, theft of equipment, scratches on the hard disk
- how to keep safe from risks
- use swipe cards, lock when not in use, keep windows shut, CCTV, make sure nobody can see your keyword
WIFI
- good range is about 60m away from the router
- speed can be up to 54mbps
- choose your Wi-Fi network and put password in if needed
- If other people connect to your Wi-Fi they can hack into your network and get onto your personal documents. This can be stopped by having a password on it.
SECURITY RISKS IN A NETWORK
- Firewall
- protect a system from unauthorised acces
- Virus
- malicious software that reproduces itself and can infect other computers
- Passwords
- make it a hard password that no one can guess
- no birthdays or first names
- use symbols, lower and upper case letters
- make it a hard password that no one can guess
- Firewall
MOBILE BROADBAND
- you can connect using a dongle or 3G
- better coverage than Wi-Fi as there are more pylons where as wifi is reliant on small hotspots
- can use areas in and out of the hous
COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS
- VOIP
- Voice Over Internet Protocol is the transmission of voice and multimedia content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
- POP
- Post Office Protocol is a type of computer networking that extracts and receives email from a remote mail server to access by the host machine.
- IMAP
- Internet Message Access Protocol is a standard email protocol that stores email messages on a mail server, but allows the end user to view and manipulate the messages as though they were stored locally on the end user's computing device(s).
- SMTP
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving e-mail. In other words, users typically use a program that uses SMTP for sending e-mail and either POP3 or IMAP for receiving e-mail.
- HTTP
- Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the set of rules for transferring files (text, graphic images, sound, video, and other multimedia files) on the World Wide Web.
- HTTPS
- (HTTP over SSL or HTTP secure) is the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) as a sublayer under regular HTTP application layering. HTTPS encrypts and decrypts user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by the Web server.
