C4- Chemical Patterns

  1. Atoms

    • The nucleus
      • It's in the middle of the atom
      • It contains protons and neutrons
      • It has a positive charge because of the protons
      • Almost the whole mass of the atom is in the nucleus
      • Its tiny compared to the rest of the atom
    • Electrons
      • Move around the nucleus
      • negatively charged
      • tiny, but covers a lot of space
      • Arranged in shells
    • Number of Protons = Number of Electrons
  2. Line Spectrums

    • Some elements emit colours when heated
      • Lithium
      • Sodium
      • Potassium
    • Each element give a characteristic line spectrum
      • 1. When heated electrons release energy as light
      • 2. Wave lengths emitted can be recorded as a line spectrum
      • 3. Different elements emit different line spectrums
      • 4. The practice technique to identify line spectrums is called spectroscopy.
    • Can be used to identify new elements
  3. History of The Periodic Table

    • Döbereiner
      • 1800s
      • Put them into groups of three called triads. Based on chemical properties
