Macbeth (Themes)

  1. Fate and Free-Will

    • It was destined (fate) that Macbeth would receive titles as predicted by the Witches, but him and L.M propelled their destiny - their free will caused their downfall.
      • Macbeth is openly doomed from the beginning as his AMBITION meant him vulnerable to the prospect of power.
        • Without influence he believed "chance may crown me... Without my stir" show he began entrusting fate.
        • Suggests that the Witches are messengers of Macbeth's fate and their predictions may inspire his bad decisions.
      • "fate and metaphysical aid doth seem.. To have thee crowned withal"
    • Near to the exposition of the play, Macbeth expresses mental control when at first denying to commit murder against Duncan and standing up to L.M saying that "We will proceed no further".
      • Macbeth later acts on the prophecies despite being "instruments of darkness" - he could have acted on Banquo's example.
      • Connotes that Macbeth acts because he hears the future - suggests he has free will.
  2. Supernatural

  3. Manlihood and Femininity

  4. Good V. Evil
