Multiplying by one gives you the number you multiplied, and multiplying by less than one will give you a product that is less than the number you multiplied. What will the product be like when you multiply by an improper fraction, which is greater than one?
Did you say that the answer will be greater than the number you multiplied? If so, you are right! Let's watch a video about vacation days. You may have seen this video before, but as you watch it this time, look for the idea of multiplying by a number greater than one. Is the answer to the multiplication problem greater than the number that was multiplied?

If the length and width of Sally's picture frame are 5 and 4343, will the area of the frame be more or less than 5? Solve 4343 x 5, and then click on the slideshow to see the steps.
Page 3
To multiply by the whole number 5, change 5 into the fraction 5/1
4/3 x 5 = 4/3 x 5/1
Page 4
Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator:
43/ x 5/1 = 20/3
Page 5
Change the improper fraction to a mixed number.
20/3 = 6 2/3
Page 6
Check to see if your answer is reasonable. You multiplied 5 by a number greater than 1(4/3), so the answer should be greater than 5; 62/3 is greater than 5, so this is a reasonable answer.
