Type:

a) Link local address:

- same like 169.254.x.x address.

- always begin with FE80::/10

- this will be assigned automatically

- always use EUI-64

b) Global unicast address

1st 3 bits should be 001x- 2000::/3

c) Unique local address:

- Like private IPs

- always begins with FC00::/7

-

d) Solicited node multicast address:

- FF is reserved for multicast

-104 bits : FF02:0:0:0:0:1:FF

- last 24 bits from EUI-64

- for every unique interface id. we will have SNMA

-

host bits in IPv6 are called interface ID.

Methods of obtaining IPv6 address:

1) static IP:

ipv6 address 2001:abcd::1/64

2) DHCPv6

3)EUI-64:

ipv6 address 2001:aaaa::/64 EUI-64

EUI-64:

a)take mac address,

b)insert FFEE in middle of the mac address

c) take 1st byte. flip second last bit from right

NO ARP in IPv6 but we have ngbr discovery

NDP:

ICMPv6 has :

1) icmp icho

2) icmp reply

3) nbr solicitation

4) nbr advertisement

5) router solicitation:

When first joining a link, an IPv6 host multicasts a router solicitation to the all routers multicast group, and each router active on the link responds by sending a router advertisement with its address to the all nodes group.
