- Primary sources are the raw materials of history — original documents and objects which were created at the time under study.
-
- Secondary sources are documents written after an event has occurred, providing secondhand accounts of that event, person, or topic.
-
Three types of primary sources
- What is written - drawings, photographs, paintings ect.
- What is said - audio recordings, films, videos ect.
- What is preserved - artifacts, temples, tombs ect.
-
Three producers of secondary sources
- Artists - create sculptures
- Cartographers - produce a detailed annotated map
- Filmmakers - create a biography of someone
-
How are secondary sources produced ?
- When secondary sources are produced by historians, they are constructed by primary sources and the work of other historians. These secondary sources recount events of the past.
-
- The rosette stone was written in three different languages
- - Demotic, modern Egyptian
- - Hieroglyphs, ancient Egyptian
- - Greek, ancient Greek

-
- The Rosetta stone was discovered in 1799 by French soldiers who were rebuilding a fort in Egypt.
- Was deciphered by Jean-François Champollion in 1822. Champollion translated the Greek first, then the Demotic. Only then could the hieroglyphs be translated
-
Interpreting and evaluating sources
- Both Primary and Secondary sources require thorough examination and evaluation. One important reason for this is that written material always reflects on the author's values and attitudes.
