Biology B3.1 B - Enzymes

lily bevan Biology GCSE English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1What are enzymesBiological catalysts
  2. 2What do enzymes do?They catalyse reactions that break down large molecules, & join together small molecules.
  3. 3What are enzymes made of?They are proteins made of amino acids
  4. 4What is the molecule that is changed by an enzyme?Substrate
  5. 5Where does the substrate & enzyme meet?Active site.
  6. 6What must be right for the substrate to fit in the enzymeThe shape
  7. 7Why do organisms need enzymes?Because without them, chemical reactions would happen too slowly & organisms would die
  8. 8How does temperature effect enzyme reaction rates? The rate usually increases with the temperature until it reaches it's optimum temperature. After this, the rate slows.
  9. 9Why does the rate slow above optimum temperature?Because as the temperature rises, the enzyme changes shape & risks becoming denatured (not able to return to normal shape)
  10. 10How does the pH scale affect enzyme reaction rates? The bonds between the amino acids depend on how acidic or alkaline the environment is, so if it is too strong either way, it can lose it's shape.
  11. 11How does substrate concentration affect enzyme reaction rates? The more substrates, the quicker the reaction, until it reaches a certain point & then it flattens
