Cards in this deck (18)
- 1What is an Operating system?System software that controls all the activities that take place in a computer.
- 2Name 5 Functions of an Operating System.1. Provides the GUI
2. Manages memory
3. Manages input and output
4. Manages the Disks
5. manages processes and tasks. - 3What is process Management? The task of insuring that each process gets enough CPU time, access to memory, storage and other hardware so that it can work without interfering or being interfered with by other processes.
- 4What is a process?Any Sequence of instructions that can be executed by a CPU, both programs and threads are processes.
- 5What is a Program?A set of instructions meant to accomplish a single task. It is a process unless it splits into threads.
- 6What is a Thread?A part of a larger program that runs independently but simultaneously with other parts of the same program. each thread is a program.
- 7What is Multi-Tasking?When a computer runs or appears to run multiple programs at the same time.
- 8What is Multi-Threading?The ability of an operating system to allow applications to split themselves into multiple threads that can be run at the same time as if they were separate programs.
- 9What is Multi-Processing.When an Operating system divides programs, processes or threads between more than one physical CPU.
- 10Define "Programming"The Process of writing out a series of instructions that tell a computer what to do.
- 11What is an API?Application programming interface.
- 12What is machine code?an executable program/ a program in binary form (1's and 0's).
- 13What are Low Level Programming Languages used for?To make small, highly efficient and fast programs.
- 14What is an assembler?A program that translates assembly code to machine code.
- 15What are the disadvantages of low-level languages.1. Fewer commands than high level programs.
2. Takes many lines of code to accomplish simple tasks. - 16What is Virtualisation?Virtualisation is a host operating system that can allow additional
operating systems to run as separate virtual machines. The
virtual machines appear as standalone computers - 17What are the Advantages of Virtualisation?Able to run different operating systems or different versions of
operating systems on the same machine
• Having a backup system identical to your current system.
• Protection of data by running applications in separate virtual
machines
• Saving on hardware cost by not having to buy separate
machines for each system/application - 18What is a UPSUninterruptible Power Supply. IT protects the hardware from power outages or spikes, and therefore loss of data through lack (or surges) of power
