Flashcards

The use of appropriate sampling techniques

Rebecca Hedworth Applied Science A level English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1SampleA sample is simply a subset of a population selected for a particular investigation. How this sample is chosen can impact the outcomes of an investigation.
  2. 2Complete SampleA complete sample is a subset of all the items or events in a population which have a particular characteristic. E.g. All black cats selected from the population of cats.
  3. 3Unbiased SampleAn unbiased sample draws items or events from a population, irrespective of their particular properties.
  4. 4PopulationA population is a set of objects or events which are of interest to the investigation. Population sizes can range from small to very large or effectively infinite.
  5. 5Whole SampleAnalysing a whole population in a scientific investigation is relatively rare, as most science is concerned with generalisations. It is rarely practical to analyse an entire population as they can be very large and some parts of a population may be inaccessible.
  6. 6Random SampleSelecting a random sample from a population is good for ensuring a manageable number of specimens or records. The sample selected should be free of human bias (you haven't made the choice of specimens), but there may be accidental biases.
  7. 7Representative SampleIn representative sampling we do not attempt to draw from the entire population, but instead select a subset of the population and draw the sample from that. An assumption in this is that the subset is representative of the whole population.
