eimearkelly3 Biology Leaving Certificate English 45 cards

Cards in this deck (45)

  1. 1Compound microscope2 lenses (objective and eyepiece)
  2. 2Simple microscopeSingle lens
  3. 3Eyepiece lensMagnify the image
  4. 4NosepieceRevolves to put the desired lens into position
  5. 5Objective lensMagnifies the image
  6. 6StageHolds the slide, which contains the object
  7. 7Diaphragm leverControls the amount of light reaching the object
  8. 8CondenserFocuses light on the object (not always present)
  9. 9Mirror / light sourceTo supply light to the object
  10. 10Stage height adjustmentTo allow the long, high power lens to fit over the slide
  11. 11ClipTo hold the slide
  12. 12Fine adjustmentFor precise focusing
  13. 13Coarse adjustmentFor rough focusing
  14. 14The units in which cells are measuredmicrometres
  15. 15Cytoplasmliquid surrounding the nucleus incuding organelles
  16. 16CytosolThe liquid surrounding th enucleus not incuding organelles
  17. 17ProtoplasmAll living parts of the cell including the nucleus
  18. 18Stain for animal cellsMethylene blue
  19. 19Stain for plant cellsIodine
  20. 20Component of plant cell wallCellulose
  21. 21What does the vacuole contain?Cell sap - salts, pigments, sugars
  22. 22Function of the cell wallSupport
  23. 23TEMTransmission electron microscope
Sends a beam of electrons through a thin section of the specimen. This shows the internal structure of the specimen in great detail.
  24. 24SEMScanning electron microscope
Uses a beam of electrons to provide a surface view of the specimen.
  25. 25UltrastructureThe fine detail of a cell as seen with an electron microscope.
  26. 26Cell membranes are composed ofProteins, and phospholipids
  27. 27Water-lovingPhosphate head
  28. 28Water-hatingLipid tail
  29. 29Double layerBilayer
  30. 30Permeability of cell membranesSemi or selectively permeable
  31. 31transport using energyactive transport
  32. 32Functions of cell membranesThe surface of the membrane contains receptors that receive chemical messages from other parts of the body and bring them to the cell.
    Membranes retain the cells contents
Membranes control what enters and leaves the cell. Membranes can allow the free passage of some molecules and prevent the passage of others. In this way they are said to be SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE. e.g. water and oxygen can pass freely but sodium ions and large proteins have to be moved across using energy (ACTIVE TRANSPORT)
Membranes give some support to the cell.
Membranes recognise molecules that touch them.
Membranes are in constant motion --> fluid mossaic model.
  33. 33DNAdeoxyribonucleic acid
  34. 34number of chromosomes in humans46
  35. 35Live plant cells without a nucleusPhloem sieve tube cells
  36. 36Live animal cells without a nucleusRed blood cells
  37. 37Where are ribosomes made?Nucleolus
  38. 38MitochondriaSupply energy, aerobic astage of respiration, reproduction by means of binary fission
  39. 39ChloroplastsWhere photosynthesis takes place, contains the green pigment chlorophyll
  40. 40Light stage of photosynthesisGranum
  41. 41Dark stage of photosynthesisStroma
  42. 42Permeability of cell wallsFully permeable
  43. 43Function of ribosomesProtein synthesis
  44. 44ProkaryotesNo true nucleus or membrane-enclosed organelles
  45. 45EukaryotesTrue nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles
