Flashcards

Atomic structure

Morgan Asuman Chemistry GCSE English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1What does proton mean?A subatomic particlewith a postive charge and a relative atomic mass of 1. The relative charge of a proton is +1.
  2. 2What does neutron mean?Uncharged subatomic particle, with a mass of 1 relative to a proton. The relative charge of a neutron is 0.
  3. 3What does electron mean?Subatomic particle, with a negative charge and a negligible mass relative to protons and neutrons.
  4. 4IsotopesAtoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.
    Isotopes of an element have:
    -the same atomic number and different mass numbers.
    -The relative atomic mass of an element is the weighted average of the masses of the atoms of the isotopes.
  5. 5Relative atomic massThe relative atomic mass, Ar, of an element is the average mass of its atoms compared to 1/12th of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
    Ar of an element is calculated from:
    -the mass number of its sotopes
    -the abundance of these isotopes
    Ar=total mass of atoms/
    total number of atoms
