Flashcards
Blood, tissue fluid and lymph
Cards in this deck (22)
- 1What does blood consist of?- Plasma (yellow liquid)
- 2What does blood plasma contain?- Dissolved glucose
- Amino acids
- Mineral ions
- Hormones
- Large plasma proteins
- Fibrinogen
- Globulin
- Red and white blood cells - 3What does albumin do?Maintains osmotic potential of blood
- 4What does fibrinogen do?- Blood clotting
- 5What do globulins do?Used for transport and in the immune system
- 6What do red blood cells do?Carry oxygen
- 7What are platelets?Fragments of megakaryocytes found in red bone marrow that aid blood clotting
- 8What does the blood transport?- Oxygen and Carbon dioxide
- Digested food from small intestine
- Nitrogenous waste from excretory organs
- Chemical messages (hormones)
- Food molecules from storage
- Platelets
- Cells and antibodies - 9Apart from transport what does the blood do?Maintains body temperature and pH
- 10What do plasma proteins do in tissue fluid?- Have an osmotic effect
- Give the blood a high solute potential and low water potential meaning water moves into the blood in the capillaries by osmosis (oncotic pressure) - 11What is hydrostatic pressure?Blood pressure
- 12How is tissue fluid created?- At arterial end of capillaries, high hydrostatic pressure
- Low oncotic pressure
- Pressure difference causes fluid to be squeezed out, this is tissue fluid - 13What is the composition of tissue fluid?Similar to the composition of blood plasma without the red blood cells and plasma proteins
- 14What is the function of tissue fluid?- Allows diffusion between blood and cells
- 15How is 90% of the tissue fluid reabsorbed?- Low hydrostatic pressure at venous end
- High oncotic pressure
- Water movies into capillaries by osmosis, taking 90% of the tissue fluid with it. - 16What happens to the other 10% of the tissue fluid? It is absorbed though the lymphatic and becomes lymph
- 17Composition of lymph?-Similar to plasma with less O2 and nutrients.
- Contains lipids from villi of small intestine - 18What do lymph capillaries form?Larger vessels
- 19How is the fluid trabsported?By muscle contractions
- 20How does lymph return to the blood?Into the right and left subclavian veins under the collar bones
- 21What is the function of lymph?Lymphocytes build up in lymphnodes and produce anibodies which are passed into the blood and fight infection
- 22Where are the lymphs?Neck, armpits, stomach and groin
