Bridges and Tunnels
23 resources created by 17 users
This Bridges and Tunnels page on GoConqr gathers community-made mind maps, flashcards and a quiz, from bridge types such as arch, truss and suspension to tunnelling methods and the history of bridge building. It's built for school students revising a topic, university students and professional candidates filling gaps, and teachers after ready-made material. There are over 20 resources here, including more than 10 mind maps and a quiz on arch and beam bridges. Pick a map, test yourself, then build your own set.

About Bridges and Tunnels
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
This unit sits in the Structural Engineering strand of Civil engineering and construction. Most of it is bridges, with a smaller thread on tunnels. The listed resources were made by GoConqr users, so each one has its own style and level of detail.
Bridge types and design
Start with the mind map Bridges. It branches into truss, suspension, girder, cable, cantilever, moveable and arch bridges, and into truss patterns such as Pratt, Warren and K. It also explains how a suspension bridge hangs its roadway from huge main cables. Next, open Types of bridges. It describes the arch bridge as a bridge shaped like a curved arch and gives Sydney Harbour Bridge as an example, built in 1932 from steel.
For more detail, try the map on truss bridges, the Bridge Design map and the AASHTO LRFD BRIDGE map.
Flashcards for recall
- Type and structure of bridges sorts bridges by purpose, shape in plane, material and continuous span.
- Brief history of Bridges runs from prehistoric log bridges to stone and then steel structures.
- Princeton Bridges links bridges to their designers, such as Othmar Ammann, and to their locations.
- TUNNEL VOCABULARY 2 covers the terms used for tunnels.
Failures and case studies
Several maps follow an EPQ question on how natural disasters have changed the way humans design bridges. They use the Tacoma Bridge collapse in Washington in 1940 as a case study. They note that early suspension bridge failures came from light spans with very flexible decks that wind could move. The three stages show how the question was refined. There is also a map on the Chirajara bridge.
Tunnels
The map Factors to be considered in.... lists what shapes the choice of tunnelling method: geological and hydrological conditions, length, time and cost, shape, and the risk of variations in ground quality.
A simple order
- Read the Bridges map.
- Go through the flashcards on types and history.
- Take the Arch and Beam Bridge Quiz.
- Return to the maps to fill any gaps.
When you are ready, make a map or flashcard set of your own to pull the unit together.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Open the mind map Bridges. It gives a quick overview of the main bridge types, including truss, suspension, girder, cantilever, moveable and arch, along with truss patterns such as Pratt and Warren. Once that feels familiar, move on to the flashcards and the quiz.
Is there a quiz on this page?
Yes. The Arch and Beam Bridge Quiz is the one quiz listed. It works well after you have read the maps on bridge types, because it checks whether you can tell the main structures apart and recall how they work.
Do the resources cover tunnels as well as bridges?
Yes, though bridges take up most of the page. A mind map covers the factors in choosing a tunnelling method, such as ground conditions, length, time and cost, and a flashcard deck called TUNNEL VOCABULARY 2 helps with the terms.
What are the EPQ mind maps about?
They explore how natural disasters and structural weaknesses have changed bridge design. The Tacoma Bridge collapse in 1940 is the case study, and the maps note that early suspension bridges had light spans and flexible decks that wind could affect. There are three stages of the work.
Are these resources free, and who made them?
Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account lets you save quiz scores and create your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.
What if the topic I need is missing?
Look through the related maps and flashcards first, as many cover several topics at once. If something is still missing, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes to fill the gap.
