About Dance Styles and Forms
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit brings together dance styles from around the world, plus the vocabulary used to describe them. Mind maps make up the biggest share. Some are single-style maps, such as Odissi, Kathak, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Chhau, Jazz, Tango and Banghra. Others are wider overviews, such as TYPES OF DANCE and Dances of the world.
Where to start
Begin with the vocabulary. The AQA Dance Terminology flashcards define terms such as unison, alignment, motif, projection and stamina. Because the page lists GCSE Dance, these terms are a sensible base for school students. Then open the mind map called Dance, which sets out ballet, lyrical, tap, hip-hop and pointe in short notes.
Going deeper into one style
Indian classical dance has the most depth here. Try this order:
- Read the Bharatanatyam mind map for its origins in Tamil Nadu and its link to Bhakti Yoga.
- Look at the Bharatanatyam flow chart, which splits the form into content, technique and stories.
- Take the Bharatanatyam quiz.
- Move on to the Natya quiz, which asks about the Natyaveda and its pre-presentation rituals.
For a different tradition, the Maori performing arts mind map covers waiata tangi, whaikorero and carving. The Gold Star Tap Theory flashcards are practical, with questions on rhythm, body hold and what an examiner looks for.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first, then close it and take a quiz on the same style. Note what you missed, go back to the map, and try again. Flashcards work well for short gaps in the day, such as Dance keywords or Saftey In Dance.
Where it sits
This unit belongs to the strand Dance Styles, History and Technique in Performing arts (theatre, dance). It also touches choreography, with maps on the choreographic process and on Jerome Robbins. Teachers can pull single maps or decks into lessons. Choose one style today and see how much you can recall.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the AQA Dance Terminology flashcards if you need the key words, such as unison, motif and projection. If you would rather see the big picture, open the mind map called Dance, which compares ballet, lyrical, tap and hip-hop. Then pick one style and take its quiz.
Which quizzes are on this page?
The quizzes include Bharatanatyam, Natya, Sthanaka Bhedas, Navagraha Hastas, AO3: Dance Styles, Flamenco's test and Traditional and Festival Dance. Others are more general, such as Dance Quiz and types of dances. Several lean towards Indian classical dance, so check the title before you start.
Do the resources suit GCSE Dance?
Some do. The page lists resources that mention GCSE Dance, including AQA Dance Terminology and GCSE DANCE MUSIC, and most resources here are aimed at secondary level. Check each one against your own course, since the community made them and they are not tied to one specification.
What do the mind maps cover?
They cover individual styles such as Odissi, Kathak, Jazz, Tango and Latin Dance, plus broader topics such as choreography, music and dance, Maori performing arts and influences in dance. There is also a Capoeira timeline. Use them to summarise a style before you test yourself.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
What if my dance style is not here?
Look at the wider maps first, such as Dances of the world, The main types of dance and Influences in Dance, as they may cover it briefly. You can also make your own map or flashcard deck on the missing style and use it for revision.
