About Haematology
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The resources follow the path of a blood sample through a veterinary clinic. Some cover the cells themselves, such as Blood Cells - basics, Leukocytes and WBC ID. Others deal with results and what they mean, including CBC cards, the quiz on PCV and TPP, and the quiz on automated analyser CBC.
Where to start
Begin with the flashcards Blood, Sweat and Smears - DB. They ask what haematology tests for and which terms describe a rise or fall in blood cell values. Then move to LCB intro, which covers Hct/PCV, MCV, MCH and MCHC, bone marrow biopsy sites and what to give in a transfusion.
Red cells, white cells and clotting
- For red cells, open the Erythrocytosis mind map. It separates physiological, relative and absolute causes, including the short rise caused by fear, excitement or pain. Then try the Anaemia quiz and the IMHA flashcards, which ask how IMHA is diagnosed and what a secondary cause might be.
- For white cells, use LCB bad stuff for stress leukogram, lymphocytosis and leukaemia questions.
- For clotting, the Disorders of Coagulation in Small Animal mind map splits primary, secondary and tertiary haemostasis, with von Willebrand disease, haemophilia A and B, and rodenticide poisoning.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first to see how a topic branches. Then take a quiz on the same topic and note what you missed. Return to the map for those branches, and use flashcards for the facts that will not stick. The Blood Transfusion mind map, the Blood Groups and Inheritance flashcards and the quiz Transfusion Medicine work well as a set.
Where it sits
This unit belongs to the strand Body Systems in Health and Disease in Veterinary medicine. Choose one topic today, try its quiz, and make your own flashcards from the gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the flashcards Blood, Sweat and Smears - DB. They cover what haematology tests for and the terms used for raised or lowered blood cell values. Once those feel familiar, move on to LCB intro for indices such as PCV, MCV, MCH and MCHC.
What do the mind maps cover?
The mind maps cover erythrocytosis, blood transfusion, coagulation disorders in small animals, primary haemostasis, anaemia, haemolytic anaemia in dogs and PCV values. Each breaks a topic into branches, so they suit a first pass before you take a quiz.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who are these resources for?
They suit university students and professional candidates studying veterinary haematology, as well as teachers who want ready-made material. Most of the resources are at university level, with a smaller share aimed at professional study.
Is there anything on blood transfusion?
Yes. You will find a Blood Transfusion mind map and quiz, flashcards on blood groups and inheritance, and a Transfusion Medicine quiz. Topics include indications, blood groups, donation, products and transfusion reactions, plus feline blood types and cross-matching.
What if the topic I need is missing?
Try nearby titles first, since topics such as anaemia, bleeding disorders and white cells appear in several resources. If you still cannot find it, make your own flashcards or mind map and use the existing resources as a model.
