About Indigenous Peoples and First Nations Worldwide
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit brings together resources made by GoConqr users on Indigenous peoples in several parts of the world. The largest cluster is Australian. It includes the notes called Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal), a cultural overview, and several mind maps on culture and beliefs. These cover belief systems, music, ceremonies, art and games, with the Bora initiation ceremony and the Corroboree among the topics. The Indigenous Seasons_1 map looks at Yolngu seasons on the north coast.
Maori topics and other regions
A second strong group looks at Maori life. The maps include Creation Narratives, Nga Tikanga o te marae, Tangihanga and Kinship Structures. Together they cover the marae complex, whakapapa, the waka as a link to ancestry, and a worldview in which the past lies in front of you. Elsewhere you will find maps on Totem poles, the worldviews of First Peoples in North America, the Plateau peoples, the Koguis, the Embera and the Wayuu in Colombia, and the Nukak. There is also a slide set called Maasai.
Where to start
- Take the Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal) Culture Quiz to see what you already know. It opens with the question of how old Aboriginal culture is.
- Read the Aboriginal notes to fill the gaps the quiz shows.
- Open the culture and beliefs mind map to see how the topics connect.
- Move on to the Maori maps, then to the North American and Colombian ones.
Using quizzes and maps together
Use a quiz first to find weak spots, then pick the map that matches them. Read the branches aloud and try to explain each one without looking. Come back to the quiz later and compare how it feels. The flashcard decks, such as Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Aboriginal Australian Culture, suit short bursts of revision.
Where this unit fits
This unit sits in the World Cultures and Indigenous Peoples strand of Anthropology. Teachers can set a map or deck as ready-made class material. Pick a resource that interests you and open it, then build a map or deck of your own if you want to go further.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Try the Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal) Culture Quiz. It starts with how old Aboriginal culture is, so it makes a good check of what you know. Afterwards, read the Aboriginal notes and the culture and beliefs mind map to fill any gaps.
What do the mind maps cover?
Most of the page is mind maps. They cover Aboriginal culture and seasons, Maori marae, kinship, creation narratives and funeral customs, totem poles, North American worldviews, and communities in Colombia such as the Koguis, the Embera and the Wayuu.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who made these resources?
They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. That means styles and depth vary, from detailed maps to short flashcard decks. It is worth checking a few resources on the same topic and comparing them.
Which levels do the resources suit?
Most are aimed at school students, with a substantial share for university students. Teachers can use them as ready-made material for lessons or revision. The page lists no exam-specific content, so use it for building understanding of the topics.
What if my topic is missing?
Look through the other regions on the page first, as topics often overlap. If you still cannot find it, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes on it with a free account.
