Memory Part 2
Fichas del conjunto (16)
- 1What is a long-term memory?Normally referred to the database where we store everything we know
- 2What is declarative (conscious/explicit) memory? Is the part of the memory for knowledge of facts and concepts and resides in the hippocampus. Is split into semantic and episodic memory.
- 3What is a semantic memory?Has knowledge of simple facts and concepts.
- 4What is the episodic memory?A memory of personally experienced events uses information from the semantic memory.
- 5What is autobiographical memory? Is a subclass of episodic memories and are our lives and past personal experiences. More personal memories are more likely to be remembered.
- 6What is non-declarative (implicit) memory? The 'how' of memory, uses many different types of memory and not many cognitive processes. Automatic but not flexible.
- 7What is Habituation? The progressive extinction of a behaviour due to a harmless repetition of a harmless stimulus, (you can read a book with background noise).
- 8What is sensititaiton?A magnification of a response due to a meaningful stimulus, (if you hear a loud noise t night you are more liekly to be frigthened by any other noise).
- 9What is priming? Is when a person is more likely to do something in a certain type of way.
- 10What are the two main brain structures for Long-term memory? The hippocampus and the amygdala.
- 11How does our memory relate back to the hippocampus?Used for the transference from the short term to the long-term memory, the more memorised a concept is the less dependence it has on the hippocampus.
- 12How does our memory relate back to the amygdala?Regulates the consolidation within the hippocampus.
- 13What is synaptic consolidation?Occurs within the first few hours of learning, using the 'long-term potential' in which the more frequently it is used the more neurons will pass between the two.
- 14What is systems consolidation? When the memory becomes independent from the hippocampus over a couple of weeks or years.
- 15What is the different types of amnesia?retrograde amnesia (occurs after illness and breaks down the most recent memories first) and anterograde amnesia ( occurs with brain damage, limited memory).
