Chapter 2 - The kernel Abstraction
Fichas del conjunto (12)
- 1ProcessAbstraction for protection of the operative system. A execution of a program with restricted rights.
- 2Process Control Block (PCB)The operating system keeps track of all the processes executing using this data structure.
- 3Privilege InstructionsInstructions that can only be executed in kernel mode.
Example: Set code permissions, adjusting memory access and enabling and disabling interrupts. - 4User ModeThe processor checks every instruction before executing to make sure it won't harm the system.
- 5Kernel ModeEach instruction executes with protection turned off.
- 6Base and Bound RegistersBase gives the beginning of the process memory and bound gives its length. This registers can only be changed in kernel mode.
- 7Virtual AddressesAddresses that start at 0 and think they have all memory to themselves. The operative system transforms the virtual addresses in memory addresses by adding a the base register to the virtual address.
- 8Hardware TimerA device that it is suppose to interrupt the processor after a specific delay.
- 9ExceptionsA processor exception is any unexpected condition caused by the user program behavior. An exception can sometimes not be a error, for example setting a break-point.
- 10InterruptAn interrupt is an asynchronous signal to the processor that some external event has occurred that may require its attention.
- 11PoolingThe kernels loops over devices to check if an event needs to be handled.
- 12System CallMechanism by called by user to use kernel services.
