Fichas del conjunto (29)
- 1What is the working memory model an example of?A computer model
- 2True or false- according to the working memory model, the short term memory is a single, unitary store.false
- 3What is the central executive? The processor which deals with incoming information
- 4What kind of capacity does the central executive have?limited.
- 5what kind of coding does the central executive use?any
- 6What is the central executive's role?To direct attention to particular tasks as the CE itself has limited attentional resources to allocate between tasks. It is also involved in maintaining and controlling the information, making decisions and allocating the slave systems to tasks
- 7What kind of information does the phonological loop deal with?Auditory information- it is an acoustic store
- 8What kind of capacity does the phonological loop have?limited
- 9What does the phonological loop divide information into?Articulatory control process and phonological store
- 10what is the articulatory control process associated with?speech production
- 11What is the role of the articulatory control process?Converts written information into an articulatory code and transfers it to the phonological store. It rehearses and refreshes information through silent repetition, which maintains the information.
- 12What is the phonological store?A temporary storage system which holds verbal information in a speech based form
- 13What is the capacity of the phonological store?1-2 seconds of what you can say
- 14What is the phonological store known as?The inner ear
- 15What is the Visuospatial Sketch Pad?A temporary storage system used for the manipulation, planning and understanding of visual and spatial information
- 16What is the capacity of the visuaspatial sketch pad?3-4 objects
- 17What is the visuospatial sketch pad split into?the visual cache and the inner scribe
- 18what is the visual cache responsible for?Storing visual data (what things look like)
- 19What is the inner scribe responsible for?Dealing with the arrangement of objects in the visual field/the relationship between objects
- 20what is the inner scribe known as?The inner eye
- 21What is the episodic buffer? An extra, temporary store which integrates information from the central executive, the visuospatial sketch pad and the phonological loop. It also sends info to the LTM
- 22What does the episodic buffer maintain?a sense of time sequencing
- 23what is the capacity of the episodic buffer?4 Chunks
- 24What is the coding of the episodic buffer?Modality free
- 25What is a strength of the working memory model? There is supporting evidence. Bunge conducted a study which used fMRI scans to see which parts of the brain were most active when participants were performing two tasks, and found that there was more brain activation during dual tasks. This indicates increased demand on the brain. As well as this, Baddeley instructed participants to do a verbal task and visual task while tracking a point of light and found that participants found it more difficult to perform the tracking task when completing the imagery task as it places demand on the same component of the brain. This research adds validity to the idea that different stores handle different types of information.
- 26What is a weakness of the research into the working memory model? The studies are methodologically flawed. They lack ecological validity as the memory we use is far more complex than the dual tasks that the studies were asking the participants to do, making them unrealistic. Therefore, we cannot trust that the studies are evidence of how the memory truly works.
- 27What is another strength of the working memory model? There is further support from case studies of amnesiacs. KF was a brain damaged patient with damage to his STM. He wasn't able to understand verbal information, yet visual information was unaffected. This shows that there are separate stores for visual and auditory information in our working memory
- 28What is another weakness of the supporting evidence?Evidence from case studies lack key features of a science. Case studies are one off, unique cases that are impossible to be replicated on anyone else. This reduces their reliability as we don't know that we would get the same results on everyone in the target population. This means we cannot accept the working memory model as a reliable explanation for memory.
- 29What is one major strength of the working memory model?Knowledge of the working memory model has practical applications. Deficits in the working memory are a common feature of a range of disorders such as ADHD and dyslexia. This can cause problems in classroom activities, so the increased awareness of the working memory model allows education practitioners to make adjustments. We now have targeted interventions such as breaking tasks down into smaller steps, re-presenting information and using memory aids to help children with disorders. Therefore, knowledge of the working memory model can enable education practitioners to be more supportive of children with special educational needs.
