Long Term Memory

- 1EPISODIC LTMAn explicit memory of personal experiences, that help us to distinguish reality from imagination.
The strength of episodic memory depends on emotions felt at the same time e.g. traumatic memories are easier to remember.
Different parts of memory are found in different memory stores but are connected in the hippocampus creating an 'episode' - 2STRENGTH: HERLITZ ET ALFound that females consistently performed better than males on tasks requiring episodic LTM suggesting that there are gender differences.
- 3SEMANTIC LTMThis is explicit memory that contains all knowledge and facts.
This is better remembered the more processing that occurs during coding and is maintained better over time than episodic LTM.
Linked to episodic LTM as knowledge is often gained from experience. - 4STRENGTH: VICARI ET ALConducted a case study of CL a brain damaged girl, who had deficincies in her episodic LTM but was still able to create new semantic memories.
This supports that the LTM has separate systems. - 5STRENGTH: LTM IS A NETWORKSemantic memory is a network of associated links across brain areas. Some links may be stronger and quicker to access which explains why some memories are easier to recall.
- 6PROCEDURAL LTMThis is implicit memory that allows us to perform learned tasks with little conscious thought e.g. swimming.
Despite easy to do they are difficult to explain as many occur in early life e.g. motor skills including walking and talking. Allows people to simultaneously perform tasks that require cognitve attention. - 7STRENGTH: FINKE ET ALConducted a case study on PM, a cellist who suffered brain damage to various brain areas, causing severe amnesia.
His episodic/semantic LTM were affected but his procedural memory was unaffected as he could still play cello showing the procedural LTM is a distinct store.
