  1. 1Why is a t-test used?To determine whether two means are significantly different from one another
  2. 2What is a one-sample test? The simplest, determines whether the observed mean is different from a population mean
  3. 3What is an independent t-test?Used when comparing means from two independent groups of individuals
  4. 4What is a paired t-test?Used when comparing the means of two sets of observations from the same individuals (e.g. repeated measures) or from pairs of individuals (e.g. when using a matched-pairs design)
  5. 5What are the assumptions of a T-test?Data is either measured at interval or ratio level, homogeneity of variance, drawn from population with normal distribution
  6. 6How do you perform a one-sample t-test on spss?Analyze> Compare Means> One-sample T test
Options>Expected valued (test value box) then can add confidence interval
  7. 7How do you perform an independent T-test?Analyze> Compare Means> Independent-Samples T Test
  8. 8How do you perform a paired t-test?Analyze> Compare Means> Paired Samples T-test
  9. 9What is an ANOVA?A statistical test used for designs involving two or more groups or conditions and/or more than one independent variable (IV).
  10. 10What can the ANOVA tell us?Whether scores significantly vary across those conditions, but not precisely which pairs of conditions are significantly different.
  11. 11What are the assumptions of the ANOVA?- interval or ratio level data
    - normally distributed population
    - there is a homogeneity of variances
  12. 12What is an F-ratio?The ratio of variance due to the manipulation of the IV and the error variance (variance brought by unwanted variables)
If the error variance is small, F-ratio will be greater than 1
  13. 13How do you know if the F ratio is significant? If the p value is the probability of getting the F-ratio by chance, and needs to be less than 0.05 to be regarded as significant
  14. 14What is a factor?The IVs
  15. 15What is a level?Similar to conditions
  16. 16What is a post hoc test?Used to make all the possible comparisons between conditions from ANOVA designs, as they control for the increased chance of obtaining a Type 1 error
  17. 17How do you run a post hoc on SPSS?Analyze> Compare means> One-way ANOVA> Post Hoc> 'Tukey'
  18. 18What is the signal : noise ratio?A conceptualisation of how T-tests and ANOVAs compare differences between conditions with random error (noise) in the data
